The Vandiyur Mariamman Temple is located at around 5 km from the Meenakshi Amman Temple. The temple is popular for the huge pond known as the Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam. This pond, which was constructed in 1645 CE, is the largest tank in Tamil Nadu. It is believed that the 7 foot tall Mukuruny Vinayakar idol of the Meenakshi Amman temple was found during the excavation of this pond.
The Mariamman Teppakulam is popular for its Float Festival, which is celebrated in a colorful way in the in the month of Thai according to Tamil calendar (January 14th to February 15th). On a full moon night the murtis of Lord Sundareshwarar and Meenakshi Devi from the Meenakshi Amman Temple is taken from the temple to this tank on beautifully decorated floats. The sight of the floats, the temple, and the huge pond is a mesmerising sight.
