Cube was given a limited theatrical release in the US on September 11th, 1998, just a little over one year after its Canadian premiere.
The film gained notoriety and a cult following for its surreal and Kafkaesque setting in industrial, cube-shaped rooms. It received generally positive reviews and led to a series of films. A Japanese remake of the same name was released in 2021.
In its native Canada, the movie was given bad distribution and little marketing by its distributor Cineplex Odeon Films, which resulted in the movie being a commercial failure, lasting only a few days in Canadian theatres. Later, Cube became a box office hit in France, but since its Canadian producers had earlier sold the French film rights for a small flat fee, they never got to share any of the massive French box office revenue.
